The Millennium Bridge in London, for which Alumeco supplied 1,700 bridge profiles – all numbered using a unique system to allow the profiles to be assembled on site.
Project description
The footbridge is 325 m long and constructed of three main sections (81 m, 144 m and 108 m). The bridge sections are suspended from a unique cable system only 2.3 m high on the main 144 m section. This gives the Millennium Bridge its characteristic appearance.
The bridge deck is made of extruded tube-shaped aluminiumfootbridge profiles 200 mm wide.
Facts
The longest bridge profile was 13 m, and 1,700 profiles were supplied for the project. The profile is also incorporated into other bridge constructions, so it can also be seen in Aarhus and Ireland.
The requirement stipulated by the main contractor was that the large deck plank profiles had to be delivered directly to the construction site and assembled there. This was a massive challenge in terms of logistics because each of the profiles was a unique piece of the puzzle, and they also had to be assembled in a very particular order. Accordingly, the elements were numbered so that Promecon’s people knew exactly where to start and where to finish.
